Leadership Learning Academy has set high schoolwide goals in the Core Subjects for all students. Please contact your child’s teachers to see what their goals are, as well as what you can do to help assist your child in meeting them.
For additional information, visit the Utah State Office of Education website on Core Standards.
In our Reading classes, our Specialists teach using a variety of methods. The five areas of Reading are: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Comprehension and Vocabulary. Through their stations, whole group time and independent working time the teaching will be meeting the needs of these areas with all students. As a school, we utilize various and countless forms of materials and programs such as iREAD, however we focus strongly on Guided Reading. Your child will be leveled early on in the year and you will be notified of their level so you can help them to be a successful reader. Each grade level has also come up with a developmentally appropriate Sight Word List for each child to master in that grade. These words are to be recognized by sight only to help them become more fluent in their reading. Parents are always encouraged to challenge their child to read Sight Words on other grade levels as well. For example, review Sight Words for Grades K-3 and Sight Words for Grades 4-6.
If you are interested in finding books on your child’s reading level, you can use the Book Wizard. If you have further questions, please contact your child’s Reading Specialist

In Writing, our students will be focusing on three different forms of Writing. They are: Opinion, Informative/Explanatory and Narrative. While the foundation must be set in the Primary grades (conventions, grammar, sentence structure, etc.) as well, all grades will be focusing on these forms of Writing. One program Leadership Learning Academy uses to help students with writing is TRAITS Writing. In addition to this, the Writing Specialists also teach spelling with all students. The Spelling program we use is called Words their Way, which focuses on specific word patterns. The students do not memorize these words, rather, they become familiar with and master different word patterns in a progression so they are able to decode words while they learn to read and write. If you have further questions, please contact your child’s Writing Specialist.
In our Math classes, the students are approaching Math with a very hands-on approach of learning and discovery. Students are encouraged to explore different ways to achieve answers and engage more in the mathematical process. We use various Math manipulatives and programs that incorporate Reading and Math together to solidify that connection. One program we utilize is called Exemplars, which are performance tasks that allow the students to engage in higher order thinking with math solutions and problems. Another math program Leadership Learning Academy utilizes is Math Reads, which teaches students mathematics through Core Standard lessons inspired by children’s books to help students interpret, reason, and problem solve. We also use FASTT Math, which allows for personalized learning based on ongoing formative adaptive assessments to promote math fluency. If you have further questions, please contact your child’s Math Specialist.
